这本书的故事大意是:

亨利是独子，他家住的这条街上，没有其他小孩子，没人陪他玩, 他觉得很孤单。

亨利想要个兄弟, 但他父母不打算再要个孩子了, 亨利提出把家搬到孩子更多的街区，他的父母也没答应, 但当他们看到亨利的孤独时，他们答应了亨利可以养只狗。

于是亨利养了一只耷拉着耳朵、毛直的小狗，名叫玛吉。

这只小狗长得很快, 它很快就换到第七个项圈(因为脖子粗了)长成一只大狗了，体重达到了180磅. 亨利过去步行上学，一路上都在担心着恶霸、鬼魂、龙卷风和咬人的恶狗出现，为此他总是走得很快，跟逃似的。

现在, 他和玛吉一起步行去学校，有了玛吉的陪伴, 就不再有那些恐怖的想法, 一路上他的想法是平静而快乐的。
